Resident sparks debate online after moving a neighbor's clothes out of the shared dryer: '30 minutes is more than long enough'

What's the standard grace period for leaving your laundry in a communal dryer in a shared laundry space in your building? 15-minutes? 30? An hour? 

Anyone who's lived in a building, a complex, a duplex, or any shared community space has likely dealt with the drama of the laundry room. Oftentimes, the bottom line in the laundry room is simple: don't mess with someone else's clothes. However, if that person neglects their load of towels, they can't expect the whole world to come to a standstill

When this resident's neighbor forgot to tie a string around their finger over their laundry, a vicious neighborhood debate sprang forth, bringing the landlord into the matter. Talk about drama. Immediately taking their debate to the hallowed walls of Reddit's r/AmIOverreacting subreddit, this resident sparked some serious debate over the laundry grace period. 

What do you think was the right call here? Wait for who-knows-how-long for a stranger to get their chore list together, or take control of your own errands, move someone's clean clothes, and set the tone for shared laundromat spaces for the future. As a frequent flyer at the laundromat, I know exactly what I would do… 30 minutes is maybe even too long a grace period in my book.

  • Someone left their laundry in the dryer and I waited 30 mins before moving it, received a note in return

  • Do not touch Other People Clothes especially not after they're freshly Washed regardless of how long they've been in there... loods of laundry. Consist of undergarments and im sure you wouldnt Want Strangers messing with Jaurs. no thank you.

  • I went down to put my laundry in the washer and saw someone had used both dryers (there’s only two) I saw it had only 30 mins left on it so i was like okay cool my wash will take 36 mins they should be done.

  • My washer was done and I went to get the clothes and theirs was still in the dryer. I waited for 30 minutes before moving one of the dryers into a laundry basket that was in the room (the table had dust all over it so i didn’t put it there.)

  • I came down after my dryer was done to find this note. I emailed property management as i’m not going to go back and forth with notes with someone who clearly doesn’t understand shared laundry room etiquette. I just want to make sure I was in the right here or if I shouldn’t have moved their laundry.

  • Laundry issue Good evening We were doing laundry today and there were no dryers available however both the dryers were finished. We waited 30 minutes before taking their laundry and putting it inside a laundry basket as we needed our clothes dried. When we came back down for our laundry we found this note.   • It was probably a little petty to involve the landlord in the whole dispute. 

    If you're aware of the neighbor whose clothes were left unattended in the laundry room, solving the problem with the hall monitor of the building as a mediator isn't the best approach. This would have been more maturely solved if they had had a simple discussion over the laundry negligence, focusing instead on future practice, instead of wrongs, notes, and passive aggression. 

    Then again, the ways of the world are mysterious when it comes to neighborly disputes, because you never want to muddy the waters so close to home. 

    I believe that this little lesson has left the entire building of inhabitants so uncomfortable and so awkward that they'll do just about anything to avoid a repeat, and that includes leaving their laundry in the dryer. Problem solved, I suppose!

    NOR. In a shared laundromat, 30 minutes is more than long enough to wait. If you leave your stuff in shared washers and dryers, then don't come back and get it, expect it to be moved. They have timers.

    “ain’t nobody wanna touch your undergarments!!Please remove your items promptly next time- it made me really uncomfortable that you forced me to touch your undergarments. Don’t violate my boundaries again, thanks”

    They should be watching their laundry. When i used shared space I wasn’t upset if someone moved mine if i left it too long.

    I get where they’re coming from but they can’t be so inconsiderate as to leave their dryer finished with their clothes still in it for over 30 monutes and then complain. They’re lucky you were kind enough to not throw their stuff on the ground, I’ve seen it happen before
